Franciacorta Cuvée 1564 Brut Nature

With its blend of 45% Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and 10% Erbamat, Franciacorta Cuvée 1564 Brut Nature Millesimato 2017 is the first and only Franciacorta with such a high percentage of this native grape variety.

On the occasion of the Franciacorta Festival, the Paladin Family exclusively presented this label to the market.

2017 is the first vintage in which Erbamat has been used in a Franciacorta Cuvée, marking an important step towards the promotion of a grape variety with ancient origins that also performs well in the present.

Castello Bonomi is one of the five wineries that fifteen years ago decided to support the Franciacorta Consortium in the greatest challenge undertaken by the territory: to recover and enhance this indigenous grape from Brescia.

The late ripening and high acidity, which had identified Erbamat as a difficult and challenging variety to use, are now proving to be ideal characteristics for this region.

The constant increase in average temperature has led to the anticipation of the  harvest by up to 10-20 days compared to the past, with the consequent risk of excessive loss of acidity.

Erbamat is very interesting because it maintains higher acidity and lower pH, fundamental parameters for high-quality sparkling wine bases.

The protection of Monte Orfano and the sunlight exposure emphasized by the “terraced” structure of the vineyards contribute to the health of the grapes and ensure significant ripening even in this late variety.

These conditions, combined with the desire to innovate and experiment while remaining faithful to the history of the territory, led the Paladin Family and Castello Bonomi to the decision to make a significant investment in this project, positioning themselves among the pioneers of this new and important chapter in the history of Franciacorta.

Initially experimented with at a percentage of 40%, they eventually developed what is now one of Castello Bonomi’s crown jewels, Franciacorta Cuvée 1564 Brut Nature, containing 10% Erbamat, the maximum percentage currently allowed by regulations.

2017 stood out as a challenging vintage, marked by a late spring frost. However, the vine has an incredible adaptability and the Monte Orfano vineyard produced a harvest that, although reduced, offers a wine of high quality.

The highly favorable conditions of the terroir, combined with meticulous work in the winery, ensure the creation of a perfect sparkling base for an exclusive Franciacorta.

The careful and staggered harvest, carried out strictly by hand, the ideal pressing and the fractioning process bring the grapes from the vineyard to aging on their own lees for 65 months, enhancing all their characteristics.

The glass of Franciacorta Cuvée 1564 Brut Nature Millesimato 2017 is straw yellow with greenish reflections. On the nose, tropical fruit and citrus notes emerge. The sip is balanced, fine and persistent, with a pleasant and distinctive touch of acidity.

Cuvée 1564 Brut Nature: the only Franciacorta D.O.C.G. containing the highest percentage of the precious Erbamat grape variety.
